Decorative Laminates Industry

US demand for decorative laminates is forecast to advance 5.4 percent per year to 12.4 billion square feet in 2015, a rebound from the 2005-2010 period. The state of the decorative laminates industry is sensitive to changes in the overall economy, as well as spending in new construction, and building remodeling and repairs. During 2005 to 2010, the decorative laminates industry contracted in light of macroeconomic recessionary conditions in the latter part of that period and a downturn in the housing market. Going forward, continued improvement in the housing market, lower unemployment and greater credit availability will boost the potential market for laminates used in applications such as cabinets, countertops, flooring, furniture and wall panels.

Consumer perception of laminates as workhorse material to boost gains
Advances will also be stimulated by the consumer perception of decorative laminates as the workhorse surfacing material, providing a low-cost, lowmaintenance, durable surface. Competition from alternative materials is intense as other materials are often chosen due to consumer preference for a more natural appearance or feel, or for a surface that can be renewed when damaged. In order to compete, decorative laminate manufacturers focus on developing advanced printing techniques that create patterns and textures that rival the aesthetics of alternative materials such as solid wood or natural stone, but at a lower cost.

Cabinets to remain largest market; flooring to be fastest growing
The cabinet market will continue to account for the single largest share of decorative laminates demand in 2015. Decorative laminates will largely benefit from a rebound in cabinet production, based on accelerated domestic demand from an improving US housing market and expanding export opportunities. In addition, gains will be led by rising interest in decorative laminates as a less costly alternative to lumber, particularly exotic hardwoods, and wood veneers in cabinet production.

The flooring market for decorative laminates will record the most rapid gains through 2015, fueled by the expected rebound in new housing construction and improvements in residential improvement and repair spending through 2015. Advances will also be supported by improvements, such as enhanced durability, and manufacturers’ ongoing introductions of versions that resemble natural stone or tile flooring, as well as such costly and exotic wood species as bamboo and mahogany.

Egypt Consumer Appliances Market

Egyptian revolution affects the whole year’s appliances consumption
The January revolution had a negative effect on all areas of consumption in the country. This effect was not only limited to the first quarter of the year, but was felt across the whole year. Appliances consumption experienced fluctuations all year round. However, people did not stop consuming either large or small appliances. Whenever the economy seemed to be stable, people were encouraged to purchase appliances. However, when there was any sign of conflict, people held back on making purchases until the economy became more stable again. Although 2011 had its ups and downs in terms of consumption, in the end, it saw positive growth rates on the previous year.

Increasing demand for cheap products
Unstable political conditions in the market affected consumers’ willingness to make purchases. Consumers started to limit their purchases to the most-needed and lowest-priced products. Small appliances were the most-affected categories by this trend. For large appliances, consumers were still price sensitive. However, unlike with smaller appliances, consumers were not prepared to risk paying a large amount of money for something seen as being low quality and/or not guaranteed to perform well. Credit payment for large appliances was preferred to making cash payments. Credit payments in instalments increased consumers’ ability to continue purchasing large appliances. As buying decisions became harder to make for most consumers they explored different distribution channels and carefully studied prices.

Power and Energy Measurement: Worldwide Market Forecasts - First Edition

Measuring real-time energy consumption, and adjusting power delivery at critical loads (as opposed to simple “on-off” functions), are becoming increasingly important in today’s commercial, residential and industrial environments. The ability to “fine-tune” energy usage requires sophisticated power monitoring and measurement techniques.

Driven by such diverse trends as Zero Net Energy and data center infrastructure management, this type of “advanced” power measurement has value in Distributed Power Systems, Metering, Home Automation, Industrial Automation, and Building Automation. The market for Power & Energy Measurement in these applications is projected to grow from 25.3 million units in 2012 to 108.4 million units in 2017, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 33.8%.

Each application has very specific dynamics, however, and is expected to grow at varying rates. Applications need different levels of advanced power measurement, for instance. In other cases, a single application will provide several opportunities. “Smart” meters, for instance, will provide board-level power opportunities, with a subset of that market – “demand response” meters – leading to specific power supply opportunities.

Power and Energy Measurement Market

Darnell has identified four markets that will benefit from advanced power and energy measurement functions: Embedded AC-DC Power Supplies, Power Distribution Units; Motor Drives; and Telecom Rectifiers. Embedded AC-DC power supplies are a strong unit market with healthy sales between 2012 and 2017. But all of these products have been targeted by companies making ICs for advanced power measurement functions; and they are all likely to be good markets, both in terms of market share and growth rates. Other power supplies, such as photovoltaic inverters and uninterruptible power supplies, are not forecast, but their role in this market is put in perspective.

“Zero net energy” is one of the drivers that could lead to an increased need for accurate power and energy measurement. Renewable energy micro-grids with decentralized management and control offer increasing degrees of grid reliability, stability, and resiliency in the face of power outages. In this situation, the role of the utility may expand over time to include both power management and power generation (exporting and importing power). Such power generation and management includes PV rooftops systems, PV/zero-energy homes and vehicle systems, and other distributed energy resource systems. Linking PV systems at the community level can offer some of the economies of scale of utility-scale PV applications. Many of these PV applications are already cost-effective for certain markets, and they are likely to expand over the next few years. PV inverters, although not included in this forecast, represent a potential, longer-term market.

Outdoor Furniture & Grills to 2015

This study analyzes US markets for outdoor furniture and grill products. Specific products covered are outdoor furniture (tables, chaise lounges, bars and shelving units made from metal, plastic, wicker, rattan or wood, as well as hammocks and umbrellas), outdoor grills (gas, charcoal, wood and electric), patio heating devices, and related accessories (furniture covers, grill covers, cushions, replacement parts and grilling utensils). Historical and forecast demand by market (residential, nonresidential, and other) as well as by geographic region is also provided in current dollars.

Outdoor Furniture & Grills Market

Published: January 2012
No. of Pages: 279
Price: Single User License – US$4900

US demand for outdoor furniture and grill products (including patio heaters and accessories such as umbrellas, covers, cushions and grilling utensils) is expected to increase to almost $7 billion in 2015. This growth reflects an improvement over the 2005-2010 period, during the latter half of which reduced consumer spending associated with the economic recession limited demand for these products. The market for outdoor furniture and grill products will benefit from improvements in construction expenditures and consumer spending, as well as the continued popularity of outdoor living areas such as patios, porches and decks. In addition, growing interest in outdoor rooms with coordinated décor will support gains as consumers continue to invest in higher quality products.

Grills and accessories to be fastest growing segment
Outdoor furniture and accessories made up over two-thirds of value demand in 2010. The grill and accessories segment is expected to see the fastest increases through 2015, benefiting from ongoing upgrades to more expensive, featureintensive grills and the continued development of specialized grill accessories. The relatively small patio heating product segment will match the industry’s overall pace, with sales supported by the availability of firepits in an expanding range of sizes, styles and price points.

Growing imports to continue limiting value gains
Continued increases in imports, particularly of inexpensive products from lowcost countries, will limit value gains to some degree. Imports have long constituted a significant share of the US outdoor furniture and grill market, and in 2010 imports accounted for almost threefifths of total outdoor furniture and grill demand. Chinese suppliers continue to further penetrate the US market, contributing significantly to the growth of imports. Additionally, some US-based companies have shifted production to China in order to better compete with foreign suppliers, a trend that has further boosted imports.
